Client Stories and the Cost Savings They Obtained with Everest

Exclusive to my organization in Canada is access to the first nationwide funeral planning and concierge service.

Average Savings Range of Funeral Services and Merchandise = $1,250 - $5,550

Case Study - The "K" Family:

Situation - At the time of death, the family had not spoken to a funeral home director, but did express interest in a funeral home that charged $7,240 for the services they desired.

Actions - Everest contacted six funeral homes and reported prices ranging from $4,575 to $7,240 for the same services.

The family requested that Everest negotiate with two of the six funeral homes, both of which agreed to reduce their price.

Results - Through Everest's cost comparison and negotiation services, the family elected to use a funeral home that was willing to reduce its fee by $825, resulting in a final cost of $3,750.

Acutal Savings - $3,490

Everest is an independent consumer advocate that provides clients with funeral planning and concierge services to prepare for and deal with all aspects of a funeral.

Are you still investing your hard earned cash with the banks? STOP!

TD Employees are speaking out about the monthly quota pressure they're facing and upselling their clients. So, instead of risking the chance of getting sold a product you don't need, you should consider working with an independent advisor.

I found a great blog post that speaks to this.

Holy Cow!

One of the things I was excited about becoming a dad was the school field trips. A good reason why I decided to work for myself - to be free to experience as many firsts with the kids as possible.

On our most recent field trip we toured Eagle Acres Dairy farm! Their primary program is awesome. The 90 minute tour moves through four stages of farm chores.

We engaged in hand milking a cow, making butter, feeding the cows and the baby animals.

It was first time Dylan and I milked a cow and made butter. After lunch we finished our visit with sampling chocolate milk, an ice cream cone and a gift.

I'll be posting more field trip pictures and video soon. Be sure to check and follow my Instagram.

We Did It! Sports, Curling and Randy Ferby Fans

I had the chance to meet a legend, 6-time Canadian and 4-time World curling champion Randy Ferby to kick off a tour and be part of a working relationship between Everest and Canadian curling. Everest and Ferby toured across Canada meeting with curlers promoting the Everest-Ferby contest and Pro Am.

Since then the tour has gained traction and I'm proud of the relationship between my organization, Everest and Ferby.

A 30 minute program on the 2017 Everest Canadian Senior Curling Championship and the Everest-Ferby Pro Am is running tonight on TSN2 at 6:00pm Pacific Time! During the program, Everest will be running, for the very first time, a television commercial for Everest!

I came across this group through a cool video they had on facebook.

It may just be a review of what makes Vancouver great, but I though the video and music alone was awesome.

Creating and Continuing a Legacy

I found a solution where you can organize and store financial, legal and important information.  This service allows you to create a legacy by building your life story and passing it on to your loved ones.

Legacy Shield is an online portal that makes owning and managing your life insurance and other financial assets easy.  Think of it as a playbook, a way to track your goals and financial assets and protect what you've spent a lifetime building.  It helps identify what steps to take to safeguard your legacy and provide you with tools to do so.  Legacy Shield even gives you the means to preserve your memories and pass your life lessons and stories to those important to you.

'We are all doing it': Employees at Canada's 5 big banks speak out about pressure to dupe customers

The three main fibs I've seen over the years for mortgages:

1. "Mortgage insurance is required to get the mortgage".

This is false. It's not required at all.

2. "Fixed rate mortgage only has a 3 month interest penalty if you break it"

This is false. There is an interest rate differential penalty involved.

3. "We can easily transfer your mortgage to another property"

This is false.  Most of the time you have to re-qualify for the transfer.

What my advise would look like for the above three:

1. Mortgage insurance is crap.  Get it for the time being while you apply for a term policy direct from an insurance company. Once approved cancel the mortgage insurance.

2. Use a lender that has a cheap interest rate differential penalty calculation for penalties.  Avoid all big bank fixed rate mortgages like the plague.

3. Generally you can't, banks want you to re qualify again for the transfer.  Therefore, do not sell your property, until we have a new approval for you.

Family on Spring Break

We're fortunate now to have some sunshine over spring break so we took a chance to spend some time outdoors at Granville Island.

Here's a video of our outing - Spring Fun Granville Island

For the kids this Spring Break also brought on another lost tooth, late nights, sleeping in, sleep overs, more reading and visiting with friends.

I don't know about you, but I think I'm ready for a regular school schedule!

Workers in the Community

This month Dylan is learning at school about the different businesses and jobs in the community.  He had an assignment to report on workers in the community.  He decided to honor his mom and dress up and report on the job of a chef.

I think he looks super cute.  His presentation to his class was probably awesome too.

You can find more of these chef photos on my Instragram feed.

History of Granville Island Redevelopment Videos

A friend's mom used to work on Gravnille Island in the 70's.  She remembers how dangerous it could be to walk around that area at that time.

Interesting to see how it was redeveloped.  Hard to believe how Granville Island has become a place for family fun.

Don't Pay CPP Through Dividend Income - Read This if You Are Self Employed

I'm not an accountant, so deal directly with your accountant on these types of matters.  If you need an accountant I can refer.

1. All of our revenue goes through a corporation
2. We claim expenses against revenue
3. We do not pay salaries to ourselves
4. We pay corporate taxes based on net income
5. We pay out dividends to ourselves

All of our income is dividends.

CPP is based on personal income and not dividend income.

If you are self employed it's up to $4500/year in savings.  If your income splitting, it doubles to $9000/year.

This way we save saving $9,000/year in CPP payments.

***Numbers are approximate

Equifax - $20/month - Unlimited Credit Pulls

Equifax program recently changed to allow unlimited credit pulls for $20/month.

Most pay $15/month for monitoring which came with a free credit pull every 3 months.

It's now 20 bucks with unlimited pulls.

This is awesome.

If you have a mortgage or going to have a mortgage in the future, it's worth the 20 bucks to get this service.

This Little Piggy

A throwback to summer vacation - a pic of Quinn and I taking a break from dinner festivities at our company trip. She enjoyed that like the quiet before the upcoming storm of Christmas holidays.

Jump-Start Savings and Enhance Tax Refunds

1. Let's Talk RSPs CLICK
2. Find out your RRSP maximum contribution limit
3. Have the government fund your next big thing
4. 8 Smart ways to put your tax savings to work

A lot of us could use more money. In fact there are many ways we could put that money to use. Ultimately we should aim to put more money to work!

There's $789 billion in unused RRSP contribution room. That's an average of over $32,000 of unused contribution room per eligible person in Canada. You're likely to know someone who hasn't maximized their RRSP contributions.

Why? (Other than as a whole we don't make or save enough money)

-We struggle understanding the RRSP program and put it to work

-We haven't been educated on the power of the RRSP loan

Simply a RRSP is a tax shelter for an accumulation of money for retirement. All capital gain & distributions are tax deferred within the plan.

RRSP loans provide us with an opportunity to "catch up" on unused contributions by

1. allowing for a much larger initial or lump sum investment

2. enhance tax refund

What would you do with an enhanced tax refund?

Send me an email to find out some options.

The engineer replies, "In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package." The interviewer inquires, "Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?" The engineer sits up straight and says, "Wow! Are you kidding?" The interviewer replies, "Yeah, but you started it."

Peak Of the Market Line of Credits

If this is the peak of the market for Vancouver, I'd suggest getting a line of credit behind your mortgage so you can get access to funds whenever you want.

Odds are there is now a ton of new equity behind your properties that you can get access to for the future.

There is a 1 month window in where appraisers can use comparables from 2 months ago (highest market value) to determine the value of your property.

Higher the appraisal, more of a line of credit you can get.

The above picture shows what math was involved to figure this out :).

What a great month for my family! (and baseball)

Then a lot of family member birthdays spread around including my mom's 61st birthday. Happy Birthday to you August celebrants.

Happy birthday to my wife Del, which we also celebrated this month.

The best is yet to come.

The Boys of Summer...Champions!

Congratulations to our young men representing the North Shore Jr. Twins Baseball Club on winning the BCJPBL 2016 Provincial Championship earlier this month.

After a grueling regular season, we prepared the athletes and a game plan, executed our plans, stayed healthy and had a bit of luck during the final four through to the championship.

Fall Ball starts September 9th!  Already.

A Realtor Point Of View On Lower Mainland Summer Market

Micky's Morning Update July 1 (REAL ESTATE UPDATE FROM THE FRONT LINES)

This was an interesting point of view from a local Realtor (Micky Kandola) talking about how he felt about the Lower Mainland Market in the summer.

It was interesting to compare his experiences against the media + stats from the Real Estate board.

What They Didn't Teach Us In School About Money

Here’s some common sense about money that kids should hear from their parents.

Don’t confuse net worth with self-worth. It’s only natural to want expensive things. But it’s more important to feel good about yourself, regardless of how much money or stuff you have. People respect you for the person you are, not your flashy lifestyle.

Make the best of the hand you’re dealt. Some rich, successful people claim they earned it. In reality, our destiny is shaped by luck, parenting, health, access to education, and economic factors. Keep this in mind before judging others—or yourself.

Learn from scarcity. Feeling poor at some point in your life helps teach you the value of money. You quickly learn the difference between needs and wants, how to shop for bargains, how to fix what’s broken, and how to handle life’s ups and downs.

Make your goals about more than money. You may think once you’ve saved a million dollars, everything will be great. But then you only want more! Instead of focusing on money, make your goals about fulfillment for you and your loved ones.

Don’t be afraid to change plans. Just because you decided on a career when you were 18 doesn’t mean it has to be a lifetime sentence. Try a few things, stay flexible. If your first career doesn’t fit, move onto something more inspiring.

Thank You for the Love and Support

My mom just had a kidney transplant. She's in recovery and in good hands at VGH as I write this.

Although it's been a few years of waiting, this all happened pretty quickly the last 72 hours. My mom was super excited as we all were.

We appreciate your support and prayers through her recovery. We hope soon she can start to enjoy her new lease on life.

Accessing Line of Credits on Your Property

Due to the price increases across the board, it might be a good idea to see if you qualify for a line of credit behind your first mortgage.

I do have access to a couple lenders that will do this, without the need to change your first mortgage.

It's best to set this up now when we can get appraisals @ high values.

The Best Week of the Year

It's typically the best week of the year...FOR STUDENTS!

Yesterday marked the start of Summer Holidays in my household.  A sad break from school for us parents

I can't believe Dylan is already moving on to the first grade.  It really feels like yesterday when we were just getting familiar at his new school.

Dylan loved kindergarten.  I hope he continues to carry the same passion for school through the years.

Have a great summer break!

A Perspective on Life: On Being 90

I found this audio of a lady talking about her life at age 90.

I found it to be very interesting on how she reflected back on her life and how she looked at the future.
