You Can Never Have Too Many Friends!

There’s a well-known saying that it takes a village to raise a child. AND it is the same about building a business.  Being an entrepreneur comes with a strong desire for independence, freedom, and individuality. However, no truly successful person EVER got there on their own!

The first time I looked to my network for something I was young.  How young! Like 10 years old.  I was the babysitter for the neighbourhood and I was concerned about how fast cars were speeding down the lane where I and all the kids lived.  I had always been told (and taught), that if you want to change something, go to the people that can make a difference.

So off I went - to the City of White Rock’s City Counsel.
Needless to say - they had a LOT of requirements that they didn’t think a 10 year old kid would be able to manage.  I had to get the signature and alignment of every home owner in a 3 block radius, I had to get the engineering department to create speed bumps that would work for the fire trucks, I had to get the alignment of all the city planners, and so on, and so on…Could I have done all that, freakin’ sure. But what I discovered through networking with others is that groups of people are REALLY creative.

When I went in front of City Counsel and my request for speed bumps (after all the work they wanted done was done) was STILL declined.  We quickly moved into plan B.  With the help of all the people living on the lane, we strategically placed cement imbedded in the ground posts all along the lane, such that all the muscle and sports cars HAD to SLOW DOWN or risk hitting the posts.  Brilliant!

My Network Came Through!

This is a picture of me with one of my business partners, Tim Luu.  Someone that has been there for me and my family through celebrations and tragedies.  When my husband was in a head on car crash while I was away earlier this year - it was Tim that went to the hospital and made sure that he got the attention and help that he needed, that he got home okay etc.

I wanted the whole world to know how grateful I am to have partners, and friends that make my life easier.  Thank you Tim Luu!

Take on the Acknowledgment Game!  Acknowledge someone in your life for the difference they make.

ABUNDANCE, ABUNDANCE, ABUNDANCE, ABUNDANCE

Did you know that there are “Abundance” Coaches?  Really!

Coaches that specialize in training and developing you to create and cause more abundance in your life.

One technique they use is called “The Dream Envelope”.  What seems like a really simple daily ritual can actually cause miracles in your life in ALL areas.  Here is how it works:

Take a pen and paper and write down a simple affirmation or a powerful question to the universe. Such as:

The true love of my life is about to show up;  Something extraordinary and exciting is about to happen to me; How do I create my next financial breakthrough?  How do I take a big step closer to my true destiny?  Tomorrow I’ll start to feel my inner confidence and self love growing;  Whilst I sleep my body and mind will be busy healing themselves

Then you put that piece of paper in an envelope, place it under your pillow and literally “sleep on it”.  Yup - that’s what I said…sleep on it.  Even better - get yourself some plain white pillow cases and write your affirmations or questions right on the pillow case.

There are lots of great resources for causing the next level of the Law of Attraction.  Check this one out:  http://bit.ly/24ElvVH

Ride the Wave of Success!

No doubt there have been times in your life when you felt like you were 'in the flow'. When gamblers experience a winning streak they say they are 'on a roll'. Athletes and performers call it 'being in the zone'. As a coach I call it 'riding a wave of success'. These are all the same - times when you feel momentum as if you are being carried along by a favorable current.

You've no doubt experienced the opposite, too. A string of misfortune when everything seems to be falling apart and it feels like you are fighting your way upstream.

You may consider these situations involve good or bad luck but you have more control over them than you might think. If you pay attention there are actions you can take to create, increase and sustain a wave of success or diminish and end a losing streak.

Let's start with the positive. How do you initiate, expand or extend a run of good fortune?

You start by paying attention. Recall a time from the past when you were on a roll and reconnect with how it felt in your body. Most likely the wave gave you a sense of momentum, optimism and invincibility. You can use that feeling to boost an existing wave of success or even create a new one.

Back to School! Yay!

I loved schools as a kid - even when it was a new school.  AND it was a new school quite frequently.  I attended 4 different elementary schools and had to learn to make friends quickly which has really served me in my adult life.

While I don’t necessarily think that school teaches our youngsters what they REALLY NEED to know to be successful in life, I do believe that we learn a lot through that system that goes unacknowledged and unappreciated.

Many highly successful people were never very good at traditional schooling.  If you listen to interviews with them, they will often tell you that they didn’t get good grades and were often getting in trouble for “disturbing” other students or they would get the, “Bobby is not working up to his potential” comment on their report card.

What did we learn that was useful?  We learned how to deal with all kinds of different people. We learned that every action has a consequence, good, bad or ugly.  We learned that certain people were always going to think they were smarter, just cause they were older.  And so on, and so on….

So, here’s to another school year of learning what they’re NOT trying to teach you...

World's Best Carbon Offset Program

As I sat with my niece not too long ago I was thinking about her future.  She is 10 years old and the possibilities are endless.  AND I was thinking about what it would take financially to give her the most choices.  And then it HIT ME!  I have a 10 year window to cause something spectacular.  AND I found the perfect avenue.

One that will offset the carbon footprint of my entire family for our Lifetime.  Talk about being lit up.  I get to make her dreams come true AND make a difference for the environment.  Win Win.

Why Your Carbon Footprint Matters
We all have a carbon footprint. Our homes, businesses, cars, travel and appliances all use energy. When fossil fuels are burned to create that energy they emit carbon dioxide, along with other greenhouse gases, which contribute directly to global warming.

Negative Body Language? - do you have it?

Quite naturally our friends are unlikely to provide negative feedback when our body language does not work for them. As a professional trainer in the area of corporate communications I have learned that providing people with accurate, useful and supportive feedback is a better choice.

One of the key concepts is reminding people that all body language is a manifestation of what we think and feel about ourselves, other people and our business. If we consider how we feel about critical functions in our business we can begin to identify areas that negatively affect our body language and our ability to communicate about our products or services. Identifying body language that undermines our effectiveness creates the opportunity for change.

However, trying to manipulate our body language is not a successful strategy over the longer-term. As I said in my previous article, surprise questions catch us off-guard at which point our non-conscious body language speaks for us. If you want to improve your body language then you might want to try the following:

BODY LANGUAGE EXERCISE: Consider the circle above. The centre of the circle represent zero and the outside edge represents plus 10. In this exercise, for each piece of the pie put a point in the appropriate spot that reflects how you feel about your ability in that area. Once done, connect the points.

If we want to increase our level of success, we have to accept that if, for instance, we love the sales process but doubt the quality of the product we are selling, we will communicate this doubt and people will not buy. Similarly, if we love the product but are concerned about our level of success, we will have trouble selling. Or, if you love the product but not the work environment people may not buy from us. Our body language communicates everything and where there is a conflict between body language and our words, people believe the body language over our words. So the first step is to identify our weak areas and the second step is to find ways of addressing this weakness.

If you own the business you might want to hire a business coach. Just make sure your hire a certified coach. Let them observe your communications and then suggest ways of addressing your challenges.

If you have employees, have them complete the exercise and then work with them to address their challenges. There is nothing more disastrous than having an employee who has little commitment to your business or who does not believe in the product or service you are offering.

In my 35 years of experience it is better to support your employees than simply fire them. They may be a critical source of information that will help you in identifying a major weakness in your product or in your communications process. For instance, if they have a negative attitude to your product but have not wanted to say so it may be true that some of your potential customers feel the same way. Now is a chance to fix that. Or, you might find that educating your staff changes their attitude to your business.

Why The 8-Hour Workday Doesn't Work

The eight-hour workday is an outdated and ineffective approach to work. If you want to be as productive as possible, you need to let go of this relic and find a new approach.

The eight-hour workday was created during the industrial revolution as an effort to cut down on the number of hours of manual labor that workers were forced to endure on the factory floor. This breakthrough was a more humane approach to work 200 years ago, yet it possesses little relevance for us today.

Like our ancestors, we’re expected to put in eight-hour days, working in long, continuous blocks of time, with few or no breaks. Heck, most people even work right through their lunch hour!

The First Step to Living an Inspired Life

Thank you to Darren Jacklin - World-Class Professional Speaker, Corporate Trainer, Angel Investor for the following:

Map out the most interesting places on the planet that you could possibly go and visit.  Because when you surround yourself with things that inspire you, then you will live an inspired life.

Suspend all disbelief right now, and be like a little kid.  Be creative and use your wild imagination.  What lakes, rivers, waterfalls, historical sites, religious sites, national parks, art galleries, museums, resorts, private islands, game parks, safari tours, deep sea diving trips, fishing trips, shopping trips, musical concerts, space travel, hiking trips, mediation sites would you like to go to and explore?

Start writing down where you would like to go and what you would like to see, hear and experience on your adventures across the planet.  Trust the process and allow yourself to be open to the possibilities and be open to receiving.

You can do lists for things you’d like to do, people you’d like to meet, things you’d like for your home, and any other ideas that appeal to you.  Be creative, without limitations.

You may want to set up some online vision boards with Pinterest, a pinboard-styled social photo sharing website where users can create and manage themed collections of images or things you find interesting.

Quick Test: Is Your Life Balanced and Powerful?

Thank you to the Fabulous Damian Reid of Amorvita for this....

Is trying to sustain “balance” (or as I prefer “equilibrium”) in your entrepreneurial life make you feel like you are walking a tightrope? If you answered “hell yes”, you are not alone. With many demands on our time and energy, we experience life as a three-ring circus.

In 2012, a Globe and Mail article stated only 23% of Canadians were highly satisfied with life. Half as many as reported in 1991 and there’s no sign of improvement on the horizon. Last year, Wall St’s Bloomberg published an article titled “5 Charts That Show Work:Life Balance is Dead”.

These days, people are working longer hours while earning less pay as a value exchange for their work. The world’s in the middle of a sleep crisis. We spend less time with our loved ones. Technology’s the modern day babysitter for our young people and teens. Many dream of discovering more hours in the day to spend on things we enjoy.

We feel embarrassed that there’s something we haven’t figured out. We’re sure someone else could accomplish more in the time we spend. Take this quick test to discover how well you are living a balanced and powerful life.

Answer each statement “True” or “False” and count your “True” answers.

A Blast From The Past

So present to the whole world of family this month.  Given that we just had Mother's Day not long ago, I thought I would share with you my Motherly Mentors.  This is a picture of my sisters, I, my mum, my grandma (we call her Tutu) and my Great Grandma who has since passed away.

I come from a long line of powerful women out to make a difference!

Vacation – victory or disappointment?

Have you ever been disappointed that a holiday didn’t turn out the way you had hoped?

This happened to me a number of years ago when I returned from a vacation – less than satisfied.

Debriefing after the fact, I found out a few things that – had I communicated more beforehand, could have made a huge difference.

There are two very simple things you can do to up your chances of having vacation victory vs disappointment

Be sure to prepare well in advance by:

1. Asking the people you will be with what they are expecting2. Letting them know what you are expecting

It’s amazing how much conflict and disappointment can be avoided by doing these two simple things.

And be sure you know what they really mean by what they say.

For example, if their answer is “lots of time spent relaxing” – you might want to find out what they mean by “lots of time”, and what is their idea of “relaxing”? What exactly are they picturing when they say this? Have them describe to you their dreams of an “ideal vacation”, and then be sure to share with them yours.

The more specific everyone is – the less the chance of surprise, disappointment, and upset.

And are each person’s expectations achievable? Do they conflict with each other? If so, what can you do now to come up with plans that work for everyone?

Gift giving can also lead to less than satisfying outcomes.

It took me many of our 30 years of marriage to finally catch on that the gifts we had been giving each other were the kinds of gifts we each wanted to get (and they aren’t the same!)

Understanding what is important to someone else is a skill and because we each see the world in our own unique way, we can often assume that what we care about also matters to the people around us.

Not the case!

Set yourself up for successful gift-giving, and vacation time – by really paying attention to finding out what matters most to the people around you. You may be quite surprised by what you learn.

For more information about how our different views on the world impact our relationships, especially with that significant other – stay tuned! I will be announcing a new program designed specifically to empower couples to have their relationships be less conflict ridden and more fun filled.

WHY do we become entrepreneurs? For most of us it’s FREEDOM!

So, WHY do we become entrepreneurs in the first place? For most of us, it comes down to one word: FREEDOM!

We want FREEDOM: free time, free cash flow, and the freedom to pursue our passions and to enjoy gratifying relationships with peace of mind. And most of us chose to pay the price of entrepreneurship because we were convinced that FREEDOM is a big enough WHY to justify the struggle that always accompanies business ownership.

BUT, hey, business is a full contact sport as you well know. It can be jarring and bruising. And it’s impossible for your business to not radically impact your spirituality, your marriage, your family, your health, and every other major area of your life, for better for worse. As the business goes, so goes the quality of your lifestyle!

After 10 years as an entrepreneur and a business coach to hundreds of other entrepreneurs, I’ve become convinced that winning in business while hating the rest of your life is a horrible way to live.

A miserable entrepreneur is of all people most to be pitied.

A miserable employee can always quit their job if they hate it enough, but a miserable entrepreneur usually has no way out of their situation because they’re trapped in a business they can’t leave. So I want to teach you the skills you need to Make your Business Serve Your Lifestyle…Instead of the Other Way Around!

EAT THAT FROG PROCRASTINATION CURE

This phrase was coined by Brian Tracy to describe procrastination. Here is an 89-second video link that explains the frog:  Eat That Frog Video

It's all very well to have procrastination explained. If you're a procrastinator, then watching the video just helped you procrastinate some more. It's the HOW to overcome it that is relevant. So here's a way to procrastinate your way into action.

My business coach Andrew Barber-Starkey is, of course, coached by other business coaches. He shared this link to a free eBook from business coach Kevin Lawrence on The Magic of Action: 15 ways to overcome procrastination and get more of what you really want.

Kevin includes 4 worksheets to get you into action. Download the worksheets. Work on one frog, the one task with the biggest Yuck factor. Hold your breath ... and swallow that frog. You can do it because others have done it.  Before you know it, you'll become a frog-eating machine. Hmm, that doesn't sound very appetizing. How about you'll become a trusted authority.

And for additional inspiration, my 80-year old mother made the plunge and set up her Facebook page. She is simply delighted at how much better it is to correspond with family and friends than by e-mail. If my mom is on Facebook, and she's been procrastinating for a long time, then there's no excuse for you folks to tackle at least one big frog.

The Power of Why!

Do you know WHY you are doing what you are doing?

Simon Sinek discusses the principal behind every successful person and business. A simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question "Why?"

One of my favorite Ted Talks that I recommend EVERYONE watch!

People purchase your why, not your product or service.  They are inspired by your passion, by how lit up you are by what you do.  Here are 5 ways you can clear on your why.

1.  Ask yourself, what makes you come alive?  Start digging in and getting to the part that you love about it.  This is about you connecting to a cause that’s bigger than you are, but which is also congruent with who you are and what you care about.

2.  What are your strengths and values?  When is the last time you got clear on what you valued?  There are many ways of getting clear on this.  Here is one site you can go to for assistance in this area. Values Test

3.  Read Simon Sinek's Book, Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action (affiliate link)

4.  How will you measure your Life?  What is the legacy that you want to leave behind?  What kind of difference are you committed to making?

5.  Ask yourself the key questions:

What's your definition of success? What are your core values? What lights your fire, kickstarts your day, or - conversely - breaks your heart but prompts you into action?
