Colonialism is the act of acquiring political control over another country and exploiting its resources whereas First Nations believe land is communal in nature and cannot be bought or sold by individuals.

In Canada, the practice of colonialism included the systematic removal of First Nations culture, communities, land, and people by erasing their unique identity.
