PASSKEY REPLACING SMS
If you are currently using Short Message Service (SMS) or voice authentication as your 2-Factor, Microsoft is phasing that out with Passkeys by default.
September 1, 2026 is the soft roll-out for Users to register a passkey when completing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
February 1, 2027 is when Microsoft fully retires the Entra ID system and Users who have not switched to Passkey will be blocked from signing in.
Passkeys are simpler than SMS or voice because it relies on biometrics such as Face ID or your fingerprint - bypassing the need for passwords.
This provides stronger security against phishing and data breaches because there is no shared secret to steal.
