If you scroll back a a couple of editions, you may recall that I invited all to a Salmon Barbecue put on by the Tsawwassen Shrine Club. It was the 46th anniversary of this event.
Many of you recognize the Shriners at the parades and events like these, but most people don't know what we do and what we do with the funds that we raise.
Shriners International is the main body of the Order, Gizeh Shriners is the BC & Yukon organization that reports to the International body.
The wholly owned subsidiary is the Shriners Hospitals for Children which operates 22 hospitals in the US, Canada and Mexico. All treatment for our sick kids is at NO charge to the families. These hospitals over the last 75 years have been innovators and pioneers in specialized treatment for children in the areas of Orthopaedics, Burn Care, Spinal Cord Injury and Cleft Lip and Palate.
Gizeh Shriners of BC and Yukon raise funds to support the fraternity and to identify and transport children and their families who would benefit from the world class treatments that are provided at our hospitals.
How can you help? you ask.
By bringing to our attention the children in our communities who would benefit from the best care delivered in these specialties in a timely manner. Transportation to the appropriate Shrine Hospital is covered in full for the patient and a family member, overnight accomodation is subsidized and there is no charge for any treatment that is required.
Children from our region have been helped with conditions such as Spina Bifida, Curvature of the Spine, Club Feet, Major Burns, Spinal Cord Injury due to accidents, and many other conditions.
