Five Fun Facts About Pez

There's no mistaking the tilted heads that dispense pastel colored candy stacked in a narrow column. But did you know any of these fun facts about one of North America's favourite sugar pellets:

1) The name Pez, is derived from the German word for peppermint, which is pfefferminze. Pull out a bunch of f's, and you have Pez!!

2) Pez were actually created in Austria in 1927, to help people quit smoking. That is why the dispenser so closely resembles a lighter. This seemed to work in Austria, but when Pez moved to America, they had no such luck. So there were new flavours and a bit of repackaging involved - then - VOILA - children around the country were demanding their Pez!

3) Since it's creation in 1955, the highest selling Pez dispenser is Santa Claus. The most expensive Pez dispenser ever sold was of a 1961 political donkey. It sold for $13,000, and only two were ever made

4) Twelve million Pez tablets are produced every day from the world's only Pez factory in Orange, CT. The factory uses 50,000lbs of sugar every four days!!! Holy sweet tooth!

5) Peach Pez have never been available in North America, however at one point you were able to jam your dispenser full of licorice, coffee, or chlorophyll tasting Pez!!
