Proactive Property Management: WCB Rules For Contractors

The WorkSafe association is cracking down nationwide on unsafe practices at work sites. This summer several siding contractors were issued stop orders for non-compliance with equipment standards.

Many contractors went out of business and could not finish their contracts because they couldn’t afford the additional $10,000 of safety equipment.

Before you hire a contractor, they must show you proof: WSB policy in good standing, liability insurance policy, social insurance number for submission of T5018, GST number. Create a contractor checklist so you don't miss the important stuff.

Check to make sure your contractor has their Fall Safety Certificate if they are going on a ladder and over 3 feet in height. If an injury occurs on a work site, the contractor is going to claim under your WSB policy if they don’t have one.

If a contractor is a major supplier of services for your business, then they must have their own WSB policy. A contractor is not allowed to hire sub-contractors unless they have their own WSB policy.

Home owners may also be required to register for coverage if you are acting as the general contractor for home improvements and if you employ domestic workers.
