Landlord group wants stricter limits on where Canadians can grow marijuana

Under our Liberal governments new Cannabis Act, which was introduced in the House of Commons two weeks ago, people over the age of 18 will be able to grow as many as four marijuana plants in their homes, as long as the plants aren't taller than 100 centimeters.

As a landlord, this raises a lot of concern regarding the safety and Insurability of the building. The major insurance companies will refuse to insure the building and even if they do, there will definitely be added surcharges for the owners. How about the health and safety concerns especially in multi-family buildings? Some of the issues that is of concern are:

1. Mould problems

2. Strain on electrical systems

3. Increased fire hazards

4. Odours from plants getting into other people's units

There has been no discussions on the side effects of this rushed legislation. Once again, the interests of the landlords has been turfed aside for a push on an Act that could be detrimental to the business.
