A Blast From The Past

So present to the whole world of family this month.  Given that we just had Mother's Day not long ago, I thought I would share with you my Motherly Mentors.  This is a picture of my sisters, I, my mum, my grandma (we call her Tutu) and my Great Grandma who has since passed away.

I come from a long line of powerful women out to make a difference!

Can you see me?

Vacation – victory or disappointment?

Have you ever been disappointed that a holiday didn’t turn out the way you had hoped?

This happened to me a number of years ago when I returned from a vacation – less than satisfied.

Debriefing after the fact, I found out a few things that – had I communicated more beforehand, could have made a huge difference.

There are two very simple things you can do to up your chances of having vacation victory vs disappointment

Be sure to prepare well in advance by:

1. Asking the people you will be with what they are expecting2. Letting them know what you are expecting

It’s amazing how much conflict and disappointment can be avoided by doing these two simple things.

And be sure you know what they really mean by what they say.

For example, if their answer is “lots of time spent relaxing” – you might want to find out what they mean by “lots of time”, and what is their idea of “relaxing”? What exactly are they picturing when they say this? Have them describe to you their dreams of an “ideal vacation”, and then be sure to share with them yours.

The more specific everyone is – the less the chance of surprise, disappointment, and upset.

And are each person’s expectations achievable? Do they conflict with each other? If so, what can you do now to come up with plans that work for everyone?

Gift giving can also lead to less than satisfying outcomes.

It took me many of our 30 years of marriage to finally catch on that the gifts we had been giving each other were the kinds of gifts we each wanted to get (and they aren’t the same!)

Understanding what is important to someone else is a skill and because we each see the world in our own unique way, we can often assume that what we care about also matters to the people around us.

Not the case!

Set yourself up for successful gift-giving, and vacation time – by really paying attention to finding out what matters most to the people around you. You may be quite surprised by what you learn.

For more information about how our different views on the world impact our relationships, especially with that significant other – stay tuned! I will be announcing a new program designed specifically to empower couples to have their relationships be less conflict ridden and more fun filled.

WHY do we become entrepreneurs? For most of us it’s FREEDOM!

So, WHY do we become entrepreneurs in the first place? For most of us, it comes down to one word: FREEDOM!

We want FREEDOM: free time, free cash flow, and the freedom to pursue our passions and to enjoy gratifying relationships with peace of mind. And most of us chose to pay the price of entrepreneurship because we were convinced that FREEDOM is a big enough WHY to justify the struggle that always accompanies business ownership.

BUT, hey, business is a full contact sport as you well know. It can be jarring and bruising. And it’s impossible for your business to not radically impact your spirituality, your marriage, your family, your health, and every other major area of your life, for better for worse. As the business goes, so goes the quality of your lifestyle!

After 10 years as an entrepreneur and a business coach to hundreds of other entrepreneurs, I’ve become convinced that winning in business while hating the rest of your life is a horrible way to live.

A miserable entrepreneur is of all people most to be pitied.

A miserable employee can always quit their job if they hate it enough, but a miserable entrepreneur usually has no way out of their situation because they’re trapped in a business they can’t leave. So I want to teach you the skills you need to Make your Business Serve Your Lifestyle…Instead of the Other Way Around!

EAT THAT FROG PROCRASTINATION CURE

This phrase was coined by Brian Tracy to describe procrastination. Here is an 89-second video link that explains the frog:  Eat That Frog Video

It's all very well to have procrastination explained. If you're a procrastinator, then watching the video just helped you procrastinate some more. It's the HOW to overcome it that is relevant. So here's a way to procrastinate your way into action.

My business coach Andrew Barber-Starkey is, of course, coached by other business coaches. He shared this link to a free eBook from business coach Kevin Lawrence on The Magic of Action: 15 ways to overcome procrastination and get more of what you really want.

Kevin includes 4 worksheets to get you into action. Download the worksheets. Work on one frog, the one task with the biggest Yuck factor. Hold your breath ... and swallow that frog. You can do it because others have done it.  Before you know it, you'll become a frog-eating machine. Hmm, that doesn't sound very appetizing. How about you'll become a trusted authority.

And for additional inspiration, my 80-year old mother made the plunge and set up her Facebook page. She is simply delighted at how much better it is to correspond with family and friends than by e-mail. If my mom is on Facebook, and she's been procrastinating for a long time, then there's no excuse for you folks to tackle at least one big frog.

The Power of Why!

Do you know WHY you are doing what you are doing?

Simon Sinek discusses the principal behind every successful person and business. A simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question "Why?"

One of my favorite Ted Talks that I recommend EVERYONE watch!

People purchase your why, not your product or service.  They are inspired by your passion, by how lit up you are by what you do.  Here are 5 ways you can clear on your why.

1.  Ask yourself, what makes you come alive?  Start digging in and getting to the part that you love about it.  This is about you connecting to a cause that’s bigger than you are, but which is also congruent with who you are and what you care about.

2.  What are your strengths and values?  When is the last time you got clear on what you valued?  There are many ways of getting clear on this.  Here is one site you can go to for assistance in this area. Values Test

3.  Read Simon Sinek's Book, Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action (affiliate link)

4.  How will you measure your Life?  What is the legacy that you want to leave behind?  What kind of difference are you committed to making?

5.  Ask yourself the key questions:

What's your definition of success? What are your core values? What lights your fire, kickstarts your day, or - conversely - breaks your heart but prompts you into action?
