Palm Desert Is The Place To Be

My wife and I decided to take a break from winter this year and headed for Palm Desert a couple of weeks ago.  A very pleasant 25 degrees at this time of year, but a scorching +40 degrees in summer. For now, emerald green grass everywhere you look, especially the golf courses.

Did you know that there are +140 irrigated gold courses in Palm Desert? That’s one every ½ Km2. Irrigated is the key word here - over 29% of all the water used in the Coachella Valley is directed to golf courses! That’s a substantial commitment to say the least. Clearly golf is king.

For us the highlight of our trip this year was a hike in the Tahquitz Canyon.  A fairly easy 2hr hike over an elevation rise of only 90 meters. And its kid friendly. There’s lots to see along the way with a 60 foot waterfall at the top. We picked up some walking sticks at the start to help us along – I highly recommend you do this.

If winter has got you down – take hike in Palm Desert.

Books I Am Reading

Elon Musk.  A true 21st century visionary. The book is a fascinating read and an insight into the remarkable life of the most daring entrepreneurs of our time.

His vision and ambition is to deliver sustainable energy and to end reliance on fossil fuels. Through Tesla Motors he is aiming to bring fully-electric vehicles to the mass market; through SolarCity he will put affordable solar power into the reach of every home owner; at SpaceX he launches satellites and is working to send humans to other planets.

Author Ashlee Vance offers an unprecedented look into this remarkable man.

Valentines Day - Devoted and Determined

Here is a happy story about a valentines day that is long on memories and short on telling. Happy valentines day where ever you are.

During World War II my parents had planned a romantic Valentine’s Day wedding. Suddenly my father, then stationed at Camp Edwards in Massachusetts, received orders to prepare to ship out, and all leaves were canceled. Being a young man in love, he went AWOL. He and my mother were married four days earlier than originally planned and he returned to base to an angry sergeant. After hearing the explanation, the sergeant understandingly replied, “Okay, okay!” Then, as an afterthought: “But don’t let it happen again!”—Contributed by Sandra L. Caron

This Ultra Cheap Material Uses Sunlight to Purify Drinking Water

What it is: Researchers at the University of Edinburgh have designed a photocatalytic material that can absorb sunlight and generate high-energy, oxygen-activating electrons in water. Best of all, this material also has the capacity to destroy organic compounds like bacteria. The material is fully solar-powered, which means it could easily be added to plastic to create a cheap water purifier. This recent discovery is seen as one step closer towards helping the 750 million people in the world without access to improved water. A more effective solution, yet also a more challenging one to solve in the long run, would be to purify water before it runs to ground.

Why it's important: This photocatalytic material has the potential to demonetize, dematerialize and democratize access to improved water in parts of the world where water purifiers are too expensive or complex to operate. It's one more example of how technology can make even scarce resources like clean water abundant. Join the Discussion
