September 23 CPABC Cyber Security Seminar

Strategies And Ideas To Help Lower IT Costs, Improve Employee Productivity, Increase Network Security And Solve Top Business Challenges

On Saturday September 23rd, we had the honour of presenting to the Surrey, Langley, North Delta Chapter of CPABC. We were grateful to Carl Markwart and his team for the opportunity to share some amazingly simple strategies that improve the ability to lower IT costs, improve employee productivity, and have an automatic disaster recovery process. During this three hour event we also explained how to be RansomFree.

With over 30 years’ experience in the computer industry, Bob is well qualified to speak on the management and operation of IT systems and the steps business owners need to take to keep their computer networks running problem free and responsive to changing business needs.

Book Bob for your next event. Call our office at 604.270.1730 or send us an email at seminars@cascadiasystemsgroup.com

Some Down Time on A Cruise With a Visit to San Diego

Everyone needs some time away from the grind of daily living – right? What better way to take the break than go cruising.

Why cruising? According to my wife it’s because everything is done for you – all you have to do is show up. For me it’s the opportunity to spend time on the water – give me a few (or more) days at sea and I am a happy sailor.

This past July, Liz plotted with her brothers from Toronto and Calgary to plan a late September repositioning cruise from Vancouver to San Diego. Toronto came ahead and stayed with us for a few days, we met Calgary at the airport and together took the Sky Train to the harbour on cruise day. So easy. So convenient.

We weren’t looking forward to the hassle of Canada Place, but were really surprised at how organized and easy it was. Compared to previous experiences, it was a cake walk.

Distance is the killer in Canada when the family is scattered across the country. Phone calls and emails are not quite the same as just being together. All six of us in one place for the first time in more than a few years with lots to catchup on, and catch up we did.

Liz and I spent a few extra days at the end of the cruse in San Diego being tourists. Hop on / hop off, Balboa Park, Old Towne, Little Italy, the USS Midway, and more. Absolutely, no end of things to do.

Sadly, the grind was still here when we got back. In the end I am grateful to Liz for plotting with her brothers.

Just How Valuable is a TV Remote?

"Cash, cheque or charge?" I asked after folding the items the woman wished to purchase.

As she fumbled for her wallet I noticed a remote control for a television set in her purse.  "Do you always carry your TV remote?" I asked.

"No," she replied.

"But my husband refused to come shopping with me, so I figured this was the most evil thing I could do to him."

This Halloween…Who’s Keeping An Eye On Your Computer Network?

It's a fact, many business owners and managers wait FAR too long to check and update their computer network’s health and security. Unless there is regular daily/weekly/monthly maintenance, a nasty virus, malicious hacker, unexpected software corruption, backup failure, hardware failure or dozens of other problems could catch you off guard and result in extensive downtime, data loss and expensive data recovery efforts. At some point, disaster strikes and they find themselves in a real mess, with a network down and employees sitting idle, waiting to get back to work.

By then the damage is done, and it can cost thousands of dollars to get the network back to normal, if that’s even possible. What saddens me even more is the fact that almost every one of these costly disasters can easily be prevented with regular checks on network security and health to remove these threats on a regular basis.

No More Excuses! Our Free Network Checkup Will “Exorcise” The Demons Hiding In Your Computer Network

From now until the end of November, we’re offering all clients and newsletter recipients a FREE Network Audit and Checkup ($1,500 value). You have no excuse for not making sure your computer network is safe and sound. If yer witchn' this Halloween, don't text and fly!

Halloween! We can't believe it’s the end of October already, but for us no worries as our granddaughters are in constant reminder mode.

Some believe Halloween originates from the Celtic pagan festival of Samhain (summers end) while the Gaels believed that it was a time when the walls between our world and the next became thin and porous, allowing spirits to pass through, to come back to life on the day and damage crops.

Today, modern consumerism with a heady mix of candy-binging culminates a month-long ritual of planning, shopping, and decorating with lots and lots of plastic.

The phrase trick-or-treat was first used in America in 1927, with the traditions brought over to America by immigrants. Guising gave way to threatening pranks in exchange for sweets.

Costumes became more adventurous - in Victorian ages, they were influenced by gothic themes in literature, and dressed as bats and ghosts or what seemed exotic, such as an Egyptian pharoah. Later, costumes became influenced by pop culture, and became more sexualised in the 1970s.

Tricken' and treatin' on Hallowween? If so have fun and if you are witchin', no textin' while flyin'.
