Disability Life Insurance - Extreme ICBC Case

I've been a life insurance broker since 2012. Recently I learned of the shocking case below which really highlights the need for a comprehensive disability policy

1. Car accident 5 years ago
2. Makes 6 figures as a self employed Electrician
3. Does not have private disability insurance
4. Qualifies for $900/month CPP disability only
5. Barely walks
6. On opioids pain killers
7. Looses his house in Burnaby
8. No longer in contact with wife and kids
9. Lives in a $700/month basement suite in Chilliwack
10. ICBC finally paid out $1.4 million 4 months ago

....This is all from a car accident.

He went from $150k/year + to $10k/year income.

It took ICBC 5 years to pay out this claim, in the mean time he was on his own.  He only qualified for $900/month government support.

He lost everything.

If he had a high quality disability policy from Canada Life, Manulife or RBC Life for approximately $250/month, he would have had a $5000/month to $6000/month income untill age 65 or till death.

If you are self employed this should scare the heck out of you as it did for me.

I will continue putting life/critical/disability insurance into our mortgage conversations.

Never Before Seen Video of Driving Through Vancouver 50 Years Ago

Wow. Fantastic video of Vancouver before things got crazy. Take a peek here.

The Ministry of Transportation just released a wonderful archival video from 1966! In it they drive from Horseshoe Bay, through downtown Vancouver, up Main street then onto Kingsway to Burnaby. It was part of their ‘photologs’ where they would mount a camera on a car and produce a film on 16mm.

In a blog post the Ministry states that “these roads were classified as provincial Highways 1 and 99 until the early 1970s. In fact, Kingsway was also a component of the Trans-Canada Highway until construction was completed on the current alignment of Highway #1 across the Fraser River on the Port Mann Bridge in 1964”.

Our trip to the Grand Canyon

This past September, over the Labour day holiday weekend, we had the most wonderful trip to the Grand Canyon. It was an awesome experience to stand at the edge and take in the wonder of this creation by God

Harmeet, the kids and I hopped on a plane and flew to Phoenix to begin our grand adventure. We rented Lincoln to get us around and to the canyon. The drive was a long 4 hours but we kept ourselves entertained by playing games, counting trees (a very big number!), finding the differences between driving on Canada Highways and American highways (there’s a few), and lots of dining.

We are very thankful to one of our clients who was so generous to let us use their apartment in Scottsdale for four days. The apartment and their help planning the trip made this possible and a memorable experience for all of us.

We were afraid to close our eyes in case we missed something of the splendor of the canyon. We did our homework and read about how it was formed. A good lesson for the kids. We met people who were climbers who thought nothing of a 15-16 hour climb / hike, and others who were going to camp in the canyon overnight. We were amazed

Driving back was an interesting experience. After dark and lots of construction kept us in single lane traffic making the drive a bit challenging. Our rental car (a Lincoln) came with an automatic high-beam / low-beam that made the drive easier.

Other than the canyon, the one place that sticks out in my mind is Sedona. A city where the lights are turned after 9pm, a city of Physiotherapists, lots of palm readers, and beauty all around. The rocks, the colours, the shapes, all were new to us – simply amazing!

This was a trip that we all will remember for a very long time.

7 surprising facts about your credit score

Having a solid credit history with a good credit score can open doors to lower interest rates and other benefits. But what exactly is a credit score and how can you improve it if it's lacking?

A credit score is a three-digit number that lenders use to assess your credit worthiness. The lower your score, the riskier you're considered. There are a variety of credit scores that use different formulas. Canadian credit scores range from 300 to 900 points and are produced by lenders and credit reporting agencies under different brand names, such as Beacon and FICO.

The exact formula that a credit bureau applies to calculate your score is a closely guarded secret. But the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) says top factors include your payment history, the percentage of your available credit that's in use, the length of your credit history, the types of credit you have used and the number of credit inquiries on your record.

Health Hack: The “Thymus Thump”

A Simple and Effective Trick to Instantly Boost Your Energy Levels, Mood, and Immune System.

And it plays a key role in keeping you healthy.

According to Dr. Steven Gundry, your thymus is responsible for dispatching thousands of microscopic defenders that fight common viruses and dangerous infections. They’re called T-cells.

The only problem is as you get older, your thymus begins to shrink. And by the time you hit 75, it transforms into nothing more than fatty tissue. 1

But not to worry - just yet - there is a solution. The Thymus Thump. Learn here how to do the thymus thump  and push back the years.
