ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY

June 15th is the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The Canadian Securities Administration offer 5 tips on how to avoid online investment scams:

1. Avoid investment opportunities promoted online

2. Beware of online investing groups

3. Beware of new online connections

4. Legitimate advisors ask to name your Trusted Contact Person

5. Check investments if they are legitimate at AreTheyRegistered.ca (this is a National Registration Search tool)

HOW TO OUTSMART SCAMMERS

Scotiabank offered a simple solution to outsmart scammers as they can be very convincing when they impersonate family members.

A simple way to prevent this type of scam is to set up a family secret code word or phrase.

If or when you receive a suspicious call, email, or text message, ask for the secret password.

Because only family members would know it.

Report fraudulent or suspicious activities to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit the CAFC Reporting Page.

Reporting online economic crime is critical because less than 5% of fraud victims report the crime.

DON'T ASSUME - ASK

The most basic due diligence that you must perform is to read the contract BEFORE signing it.

I was approached by a couple for help to get out of a listing agreement they had just signed.

They assumed the Realtor included all the key points that were discussed.

To their dismay and frustration, the terms of the contract were different than what they expected.

My dismay is that this couple reached out for help after the fact.

If you can spend hours researching what type of appliance or vehicle to buy, then spend the same amount of time or more on higher valued assets like your home.

This helpful link provides 101 typical due diligence questions to ask, but remember that every situation is unique and to keep asking questions until you get satisfactory answers.

Never assume the obvious is true. (William Safire).

LOUGHEED LANDMARK UPDATE

April 25th marks a milestone for the Lougheed Landmark project.

We submitted a 3-in-1 application for OCP amendment, rezoning, and development permit.

We opted for the consolidated development application to streamline the process because we have all the required reports.

Just before the long weekend, the City responded to our application by scheduling a meeting for July 2nd.

Our proposed 35-storey tower includes 290 residential units of which 18 are affordable housing units and 10 are live-work units.

The ground floor daycare facility was revised to 74 children with 3 commercial retail units reserved for learning centers that can provide after-school care.

Updates can be reviewed at http://julyono.com, http://ocmi.ca, LinkedIn, or Facebook.

MARIE KONDO METHOD

My 89-year old mother is a classic hoarder because she grew up during the war and experienced deprivations that most North Americans cannot truly understand.

This means it is very difficult for her to let things go and I end up throwing things out when she's not around (not the ideal scenario).

We recently hired a Personal Assistant for her and Lynda has been tasked to help organize my mother's room starting with watching the Marie Kondo videos to prepare the way.

The KonMari Method is not so much about tidying as it is about discarding items that lack value

We are starting with the basic folding method before launching into a full scale de-cluttering.

OPERA BROWSER

The Opera browser was created by Opera Software ASA, a Norwegian company founded in 1995.

The browser itself was initially developed as a research project at Telenor, Norway's largest telecommunications company, before being spun off into Opera Software.

Opera has built-in VPN, ad blocker, and uses less memory than other browsers.

I purchased a third party VPN service that expires next year.

Looks like VPN providers will be unnecessary if all browsers include it going forward.
