NOVEMBER 21, 1620

Did you know . . . The Mayflower was blown 200 miles off course after a 66-day journey through stormy seas.

The settlers had originally chartered the Speedwell for this trip, but Captain Reynolds (the owner) sabotaged the ship and in doing so, he was able to honor his contract, keep the pay, repair the leaky ship, and sell it for profit.

The story of the Mayflower Saints is a powerful testament of endurance, patience, and faith.

Over half the settlers perished until they were saved by 2 aboriginals: Squanto and Samoset, who taught them to farm and how to survive.

President George Washington declared the first public holiday on November 26, 1789 - A Day of Publick Thanksgiving.

90 years later, Canada followed by officially declaring a public Thanksgiving holiday on November 6, 1879.

THE GREATEST COMPLIMENT

Being taken for granted is an unpleasant but sincere form of praise. Ironically, the more reliable you are and the less you complain, the more likely you are to be taken for granted.

Gretchen Rubin is a best-selling author, speaker, and podcaster for her work on happiness, habits, and human nature.

Her book The Happiness Project is available for free on the Internet Archive.

Is there someone that you've been taking for granted?

How about dropping a thank you text or sending a handwritten card to express your appreciation?

It's the little gestures of gratitude that make the biggest impact.

PATIENCE, PERSISTANCE, PERSEVERANCE

This inspiring TedTalk by Percival Tussamba on the power of perseverance, persistence, and patience.

Patience isn't just waiting, it's endurance that builds resilience.

Persistence isn't just pushing through, it's knowing why you keep going.

Perseverance isn't stubbornness, it's a journey that is being written.

He reminds us that moments of failure, fear, and doubt is necessary for successful outcomes.

And that sometimes (I would say oftentimes) growth happens in the shadow of uncertainty.

ORANGE ABUNDANCE

Even though I am "sansei" (third generation) and my family has been celebrating Thanksgiving since 1907, I used to wonder  -  what is the significance of pumpkin pie at every feast because I'm not a fan.

It turns out that most gourds (squash, pumpkin) ripen in the autumn and need to be harvested before the first frost.

Pumpkins have been harvested in North America for thousands of years and was a staple food source for the Indigenous.

Pumpkins symbolize abundance, gratitude, and thanksgiving.

I prefer my gourds roasted in the oven - coat with butter, liberally sprinkle brown sugar over the top, add seasoned salt on top of that, bake at 400F for about 45 minutes or until you can carve a spoon through the meat.

ARE MILLENNIALS REALLY ENTITLED?

While researching gratitude and thanksgiving, I came cross this Financial Times transcript on "the truth about 'entitled millennnials' by Isabel Berwick and Taylor Nicole Rogers.

Boomers have been unfair in perpetuating this misnomer because they are not displaying entitled behavior but a different set of expectations than any previous generation.

Unlike burning the midnight oil like their parents and grandparents, millennials understand the value of work-life balance, collaboration, and enjoying life now versus waiting for a distant retirement.

They refuse to work in toxic jobs with little or no reward unlike their parents.

There is no spoiled generation, only spoiled people from each generation (Melanie Allen, Journalist).

THE CAVE THE ROAD THE TABLE THE FIRE

I had the pleasure of hearing Karl Martin speak at the Business By The Book luncheon at The Paradox Hotel.

He is an executive coach who helps leaders focus on mindset, heartset, and soulset - not just competencies or skillsets.

I got my autographed copy of his latest book: The Cave The Road The Table and The Fire: Leading From A Deeper Place.

God uses deserts as preparation places (Karl Martin, November 21, 2025).

This is the only way to disrupt yourself to the next level.
