Bank of Canada holds key rate steady as Middle East war clouds outlook

In his speech before the press conference on April 29th, Governor Tiff Macklem suggested that, "if the United States were to impose significant new trade restrictions on Canada, we may need to cut the policy rate further to support economic growth.

Alternatively, if oil prices continue to increase, and particularly if they remain elevated, the risk that higher energy prices become ongoing generalized inflation increases. If this starts to happen, then there may be a need for consecutive increases in the policy rate."

It is highly unlikely that the Bank of Canada would tighten monetary policy when the housing and job markets are as depressed as they are today.

Spring Home Maintenance

As winter fades and warmer weather returns, spring is the perfect time for homeowners to give their property a seasonal checkup. A little preventative maintenance now can help avoid costly repairs later and keep your home in great condition.

One of the first things to inspect is your roof and gutters. Winter storms and freezing temperatures can loosen shingles or cause debris to build up in gutters and downspouts. Clearing out leaves and checking for visible damage can help ensure proper drainage when spring rains arrive.

Next, take a look around the exterior of your home. Check for cracks in the foundation, damaged siding, or areas where caulking may have deteriorated around windows and doors. Addressing these small issues early can prevent moisture from entering your home.

Spring is also a great time to service important systems inside the home. Consider replacing furnace filters, testing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and scheduling a professional inspection for your air conditioning system before the summer heat arrives.

Outside, inspect decks, patios, and fences for signs of wear after the winter months. Cleaning surfaces and tightening loose boards or railings can extend their lifespan and improve safety.

Finally, walk around your yard and ensure proper drainage away from the foundation. Melting snow and spring rain can sometimes reveal grading issues that may need attention.

Owning a home comes with ongoing responsibilities, but regular seasonal maintenance helps protect one of your largest investments. Taking a few hours each spring to complete these checks can go a long way toward preventing bigger problems down the road.

The Strength Behind Every Family

To all the moms who give so much of themselves.  The dreamers, the doers, and the steady hearts that keep everything moving forward. Whether you're in the early years of parenthood, cheering on grown children from the sidelines, or sharing your wisdom as a grandmother, your influence reaches further than you know.

Thank you for the sacrifices you make, the patience you show, and the unconditional love you pour into the world every single day. You are appreciated, you are admired, and you are loved.

Happy Mother’s Day!

New Trail Discovery

My mom came for a visit, and since she’s got a real passion for long, scenic walks in nature, I decided to do something a bit out of character—I actually typed “scenic trails near me” into Google. To my surprise, several beautiful options popped up, all just five minutes from home! It’s funny how these gems can be right under our noses the whole time.

We ended up choosing the Pitt River Regional Greenway, and it truly exceeded all our expectations. The walk took us alongside the Fraser River, and it felt so invigorating to be out in the fresh air. The trail wound through serene woods filled with a chorus of birdsong—so many feathered friends making their presence known. At one point, the path led us up a dyke where we had a unique vantage point overlooking the local airport and flight training school. Our son Eden was absolutely fascinated—he would have happily stayed there all afternoon, watching the small airplanes and even water planes take off and land.

Although the trail continued on, tempting us to explore further, we decided to turn back before completing the entire route. It was almost comical—and, admittedly, a little frustrating—for my wife and me to realize how long we’ve lived here without ever knowing about this incredible trail, which, as it turns out, is actually a section of the Trans Canada Trail. Still, as they say, better late than never!

Why is it important to protect your mortgage?

Buying a home is a big decision and a really big financial commitment, but life can change fast in any direction. For most folks, the only thing stopping their mortgage becoming an unbearable liability is their paycheck. But what happens if the paycheck goes away even temporarily due to illness, death or disability?

Did you know that:

- 10 months is the average length of time disabled claimants are off work

- 1 in 5 Canadians experience a mental health issue each year (e.g. stress leave)

- 1 in 3 Canadians will be disabled for 90 days or more before age 65

- 56% of Canadians who took time off for a disability said they returned to work early due to financial reasons

- 33% of workplace disability claims are related to mental health

The right mortgage protection insurance takes care ofyour mortgage payments or even pays off the balance in times of crisis. If any of these questions or stats shown above have you wondering, then we need to have a conversation about how to better and cheaply protect your biggest debt. Call or email me today.
